Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar‘s Hindi Medium has been on a magical run at the box office ever since it released on May 19. The movie has been raking in the moolah steadily and on day 12, it collected another Rs 2.22 crore. This takes the overall box office tally of Hindi Medium to Rs 41.77 crore. Talking about the detailed collection, trade analyst Taran Adarsh revealed on Twitter, “#HindiMedium eyes Rs 50 crore… [Week 2] Fri Rs 2.82 crore, Sat Rs 4.21 crore, Sun Rs 5.11 crore, Mon Rs 2.20 crore, Tue Rs 2.22 crore. Total: Rs 41.77 crore. India biz.”
Released in 1126 screens, Hindi Medium has done really well at the box office and has been very steady even in its second week. In fact, no one expected the movie to earn such a huge amount. The low buzz and niche release meant that the film got a small opening. However, with a tremendous word-of-mouth publicity and fantastic reviews by the critics and the public, Irrfan Khan’s movie has been rocking the box office. It is now eyeing the Rs 50 crore mark and might very well reach there by the end of the third weekend. In its lifetime run it might end up earning Rs 55-60 crore, making it one of the most successful films of the years and prove once again that content is king! The makers will be really happy because the film has already recovered its money and has made a decent profit too. The cost of production for Hindi Medium was just Rs 14 crore. Add to that the publicity and advertising cost of Rs 8 crore and you have the total budget of the movie restricted to Rs 22 crore. If the movie ends up with Rs 55 crore in its lifetime run, the makers would have made a profit in excess of Rs 30 crore, which is fantastic for such a niche film.
