On Tuesday night, the Mumbai Customs arrested two Indian women for smuggling 1.3 kg gold valued at about Rs 40 lakh at the CSI Airport.
In the first case, Mumbai-based resident Tabassum Arif Shaikh (31) arrived from Dubai by Jet Airlines flight carrying assorted gold jewellery which collectively weighing 402 grams valued at Rs 12 lakh, concealed in the bra worn by her.
On the same night, another lady passenger named Mohana James (32) arrived from Dubai by Emirates flight with eight gold bars of 10 tolas, weighing 928 grams valued at Rs 27.3 lakh concealed by her inside the rectum. Further examination revealed that she was working as a caretaker for the playing children in one play school at Perambur in Tamil Nadu.
GOLD SEIZED FROM KENYAN NATIONAL
In another incident, a Kenyan national Fatma Hasan was detained with assorted gold jewellery weighing 610 grams valued Rs 18 lakh hidden in her baggage. In her statement to the Custom officials, she admitted that she is running a shop of ready made garments in Mumbassa (Kenya).
In the fourth case, one Karnataka resident Abdul Jailani (53) coming from Riyadh via Bahrain was arrested for smuggling 3 gold bars of 10 tola, each totally weighing 349 grams valued at Rs 10.3 lakh.
"He had concealed these gold bars in specially made hidden pocket of skull cap worn by him. Even Abdul works as a salesman in a readymade garments shop in Riyadh," an official said.
In another case, Juleka Usman Mansuri (47), a resident of Dongri, Mumbai who had to depart to Dubai was arrested with $ 18000 - equivalent to Rs 11,44,800. She had concealed these between the pages of some books carried by her in her baggage.
During investigation, it was found that all the passengers had acted as carriers for smuggling the seized goods for monetary consideration.
