The investigation wing of the Income Tax department has attached two benami properties, allegedly owned by BJP leader Sushil Waswani in Bhopal. Waswani was also raided by the Income Tax department on December 20 last year and was accused of converting over Rs 150 crore of black money into white post demonetisation through the Mahanagar cooperative bank that he controlled.
According to an officer involved with the investigation, the values of the two benami properties runs into several crore. While one is an under construction shopping complex, the second property is an under construction mall.
For the sake of records, the two properties were being built in the name of Sunvision Infratech private limited and Gurumukh Das contractor private limited. The income tax department, on the basis of documents seized from Waswani, has concluded that he is the real owner.
During the December raids the Income tax department had recovered several incriminating documents that pointed towards a pattern of converting black money into white.
The opposition Congress party in December had alleged that Waswani was not just converting his own black money to white but also that of top BJP and RSS leaders.
Waswani enjoyed the status of a minister of state when he was appointed the chairman of the MP housing corporation by the present government.
Waswani has risen from a bus conductor to a man worth several hundred crore.
