Farhan Akhtar on abolishment of triple talaq: An archaic practice that needs to go
A bench of the senior-most judges, with different religious background, have called to strike down the practice of triple talaq that pertains in Islamic cultures. Though, religiously, triple talaq has a rigorous protocol that needs to be followed but over the years the practice had reduced it to divorces over Skype, SMS, or calls by just repeating the words talaq thrice. Reactions from all over the country, from various sections of the society, have started pouring in, and Bollywood, too, is being vocal about it.
We met up Farhan Akhtar to talk about his upcoming film Lucknow Central, and as the conversation forayed into various territories including the film, cinema, and life in general, the trending topic of ‘triple talaq’ came up as well. After the number of times we have seen a star keep their opinion to themselves lest they stir up a controversy, we were expecting that Farhan, too, will pick silence over words. But Farhan was happy to add his two cents to the matter. He was happy with the decision made by the Supreme Court, and said that it was about time the practice was struck down.
“The way the society is moving forward, the focus that is there on women’s rights and equality, and the fight for gender equality. It is very healthy that such a decision has been made. Now there is a 6 month window to figure out how it should be translated into a law, I hope it happens. Because it is a very archaic practice, it is time for it to go,” the actor said.
Farhan announced his separation from his wife Adhuna Bhabhani last year in January. They had been married for 15 years. Back in May, this year, their divorce came through and they have now legally parted their ways.
