This Raksha Bandhan, Akshay Kumar and his sister want all the brothers to empower their sisters instead of ‘protecting’ them – Watch Video

Akshay Kumar and his sister Alka Bhatia have something to say on this Rakshabandhan

Akshay Kumar has always stood for the cause of women empowerment. Today he shared an interesting video on his twitter account where his sister, Alka Bhatia, is seen recalling the days when she couldn’t attend late night parties because of Akki. Her parents, like all other Indian parents, wanted her to step out of the house only with her brother Raju (Akshay Kumar’s real name is Rajeev Bhatia) but he was of the opinion that she should take care of her safety, herself. She had to miss a lot of parties as a teenager and she hated her brother for that, then. But, Alka got to understand the depth of his statement only when her daughter, Simar, grew up. She was going abroad for her studies and Alka involuntarily gave the same advise to her that Akshay used to give her – ‘Apna Dhyaan Khud Hi Rakhna Hai.’ Today the brother-sister duo want all the brothers of the nation to give the same advice to their sisters. They want them to empower the girls instead of ‘protecting’ them. So simple, yet such a strong statement
Akshay shares a great bond with his sister. Two years ago on RakshaBandhan, the duo had shot another video where they were seen enacting the ‘Sitaharan’ episode from Mahabharata. Akshay played Raavan. He tricked his sister, who was playing Sita, into crossing the ‘Lakshman Rekha’ but she slapped him instead and said, ‘Main Sita Nahi, Rakhi Sawant Ho’. Though hilarious, it had a hidden message of women empowerment. You can watch the video here
Very few people know that the Bollywood actor, along with Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray, runs free martial arts classes for women in Mumbai. In fact, he plans to open 100 such self-defence academies across the country in the next five years. “I am planning to spread this self-defence campaign as far and as wide as possible,” he said last year.
