Farhan AkhtarDiana Penty, Ravi Kishan, Ronit Roy and team Lucknow Central visited the Yerwada Jail in Pune yesterday (August 15) for a special function. On the occasion of Independence Day, the team met the prisoners of the jail and inspired them with their thoughts. Not only did they tell them not to lose hope but also dream big. I also got an opportunity to be a part of this special event with a few other selected media personnel and I have to say it was indeed a privilege. I saw several performances by Farhan, the prisoners and police personnel; but the highlight of the day was a jugalbandi between Farhan, an inmate and two police officers. The trio, along with music composer Rochak Kohli, sang Rock On and left everyone present there mesmerised…
Visiting a high security jail for the first time, I was very apprehensive of how the event would go and the strict code of conduct I would have to follow. However, as I entered the jail, all the fear went away. Not only were the police personnel very warm and receptive, the atmosphere inside the prison was also very nice. I could see several hand-made wall paintings across the premise. The whole jail was quite neat and clean. All the prisoners were co-operative and as the whole team arrived, they started hooting and clapping. For the first time, during their annual Independence day function, such an event was taking place, so they were quite excited.

The show started off with a few key notes, post which the latest song from Lucknow Central – Teen Kabootar was shown for the first time. I loved the song, but the inmates went crazy after seeing it. They were the first ones to see the song, so they felt special and clapped continuously for several minutes. Apart from that, I saw Ravi Kishan sing a few Bhojpuri songs, ADG of Police – Bhushan Kumar recite some poems and much more. Farhan also performed on Meer-E-Kaarwan and Atrangi Yaari, before performing a jugalbandi with prisoners and police personnel. Check out a few pictures from the event right here!
Farhan even went on to announce that they would love to have a special screening of Lucknow Central for the Yerwada jail inmates, after taking proper permission from the jail authorities and the producers. ADG of Police, Bhushan Kumar, also said he would surely screen the film for the prisoners – a very generous gesture by both these men. All in all, my whole experience of the jail visit was fantastic and I loved the fact that the jail authorities are honing several talented prisoners and policemen.
Being the first ground event for Lucknow Central, I feel the makers took a phenomenal decision to organise such a function inside Yerwada jail. What do you have to say about this initiative?
